When you take care of your whole body, your whole body benefits. Good nutrition and wellness practices also can positively affect one’s memory and sense of focus for creative projects. In this post, I share my first #Rap Video, and announce my second book Passion Fuels Purpose: How To Find Your Passion And Fuel Your Purpose.
A Real Boss Reads- A Marketer Rapping To Promote Literacy
I shot this video with an iPhone in the parking lot of a French Bakery in Atlanta, GA.
I’d just finished a meeting to discuss a potential job opportunity. I had been unemployed for two months, but since I finally discovered the secret to vibrant health, I was able to capitalize on the moment without panicking about my income. During my period of unemployment, (in between looking for new career opportunities) I published two books for young women, particularly Cosmetology graduates to address the many questions asked by my students while I worked as a recruiter at a Beauty School.

The day I resigned from my employment due to having a 2-hour one-way commute, I took a huge leap of faith. I had no other jobs lined up, but there were two networking events scheduled for the next day. I attended one event at a pizza restaurant sponsored by a staffing company with the hopes of meeting a Recruiter. There were NO Recruiters at the event. I made the most of the time by connecting with a Creative Director from Philly who was also annoyed that there were no Recruiters. When I discovered he produced music, I asked him to use one of his tracks, and he agreed.
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade and a song.
I listened to the music, penned the words and performed my very first rap song (including a bit of freestyling, at the end). I’m not a professional rapper (obviously)–just a Marketing Major, Student Advocate and former theatre student who dropped out of my state’s Art Conservatory School in the 10th grade because I didn’t want to participate in the musical theatre program. That was a poor decision as a teenager, as it was my second chance. I had earned a C average from not completing my journal assignments and C’s were not allowed in Art School..my teachers gave me the chance to enter the musical theatre program but I was too embarrassed to explain to my peers why I would no longer be in class with them.
That was a silly idea.
I didn’t release this video initially because I was concerned about the incorrect grammar in the rap. I later realized that was a silly idea.
Life is about helping others, learning from your mistakes, taking intelligent risks, and helping your body and mind to perform at optimal levels even under intense pressure…In a sense, letting go and letting God.
My testimony is, even though I had less than 20 dollars to my name when this video was shot, I was able to land employment working from home as a Student Services Advisor, which is exactly the role I wanted. I learned a lot from Recruiting, but I discovered my passion is helping students and individuals reach their goals once they get started on their journey.
The moral of my story: When you learn to have fun in spite of your challenges and have faith, God will supply all of your needs.
